Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“You start by jumping off the back of a ferry, which is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering at six in the morning. After that it is a flat, honest, fast course.”

Abraham Spring: founder, Unbroken

The race

Ohio has the most unusual swim start in the sport: the Kelleys Island ferry lowers its ramp to the water and athletes jump in feet first in a rolling self-seeded start. From there it is a single loop in the protected water of Sandusky Bay back to Paper District Marina. The bike is one flat loop out through the farmland of Erie and Sandusky counties, about 820 feet of climbing in 56 miles. The run is two flat laps through downtown Sandusky with under 130 feet of gain. IRONMAN also publishes more measured detail for this course than for almost any other on the American calendar, which is why so little of this page sits in the unconfirmed list.

The course

No course maps for this race. IRONMAN publishes no downloadable route for any leg of this race, only a live tracker that runs on race day, so there is nothing to draw a course map from. Everything below comes from the official course page, checked on the date at the foot of this section.

Swim1.2 mi 1.9 km
One lap

One loop in a protected section of Sandusky Bay, and the start is unlike anything else on the calendar: a rolling self-seeded start where you jump feet first off the lowered ramp of the Kelleys Island ferry. You walk about 150 yards from transition at Paper District Marina to the start by Jackson Street Pier, and finish back at the marina.

Bike56 mi 90.1 km
One lap250m gain

One loop out of the city limits and onto rural roads through Erie and Sandusky county farmland, with about 820 feet of climbing across the whole leg, which makes it a flat course by any normal measure.

Run13.1 mi 21.1 km
2 laps

Two loops from Paper District Marina through downtown Sandusky, flat and fast with under 130 feet of elevation gain, and easy for spectators to move around.

Race Week Is Where People Unravel.

Eleven months of good work, then seven days of panic. Almost everything that goes wrong in race week is somebody trying to help themselves.
