49 weeks to race day: base season

Plenty of runway. This far out, the win is a boring, consistent base rhythm: aerobic volume, strength, technique. The structured block starts closer in; what you do now decides how high it can climb.

R
Recover
Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.
A
Align
Fit the plan to your actual life, not the one you wish you had.
C
Condition
Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.
E
Execute
Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? 70.3 training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.

One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.

Already have the app, or want it? The app takes this race and builds the block around it.
Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“The fastest 70.3 swim in the world in 2023, and it is the river doing it. Bank the time, then climb out of T1 on legs that have not woken up yet, which is the bit nobody warns you about.”

Abraham Spring: founder, Unbroken

The race

Maine is the fast swim race. The Kennebec carries you downstream and in 2023 it produced the quickest 70.3 swim split anywhere in the world, and third best swim in North America at the Athlete Choice Awards. The catch arrives immediately: T1 sits at the top of a short climb out of the valley. The bike heads south down the Kennebec valley through rural Maine with real climbs and long descents. The run is a single loop, part shaded beside the river, through the historic towns of Hallowell and Augusta, finishing in front of the State Capitol.

The course

No course maps for this race. IRONMAN publishes no downloadable route for any leg of this race, only a live tracker that runs on race day, so there is nothing to draw a course map from. Everything below comes from the official course page, checked on the date at the foot of this section.

Swim1.2 mi 1.9 km
Point to point, with the current

Point to point downstream on the Kennebec, and quick enough that it was the fastest 70.3 swim in the world in 2023 and voted third best swim in North America. The current does the work. Do not read the split as fitness.

Bike56 mi 90.1 km
Lap count not published

South down the Kennebec River valley through rural Maine towns, with climbs and smooth descents rather than flat riding. The official page does not state a lap count.

Run13.1 mi 21.1 km
One lap

A single loop mixing rolling hills and flat stretches with shaded sections beside the Kennebec, through the historic towns of Hallowell and Augusta, finishing in front of the State Capitol building.

T1Out of the water and straight into a short climb to the top of the valley, so expect the legs to be working before you reach the bike.
T2Simple and quick by the organiser's own description, designed to be in and out.
Typical race day17–28°C air · 24°C water

Not yet confirmed for this edition: bike lap count, bike elevation gain, cut-off times, water temperature history. We publish these only once they are on the official course page, so check there before you pace off anything here.

Race Week Is Where People Unravel.

Eleven months of good work, then seven days of panic. Almost everything that goes wrong in race week is somebody trying to help themselves.
