43 weeks to race day: base season

Plenty of runway. This far out, the win is a boring, consistent base rhythm: aerobic volume, strength, technique. The structured block starts closer in; what you do now decides how high it can climb.

R
Recover
Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.
A
Align
Fit the plan to your actual life, not the one you wish you had.
C
Condition
Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.
E
Execute
Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? 70.3 training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.

One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.

Already have the app, or want it? The app takes this race and builds the block around it.
Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“Three hundred and thirty feet of climbing in fifty-six miles, and thirty degree heat on an unshaded run. This is a pure engine course with a heat problem attached, and people underestimate the second half of that sentence every year.”

Abraham Spring: founder, Unbroken

The race

Eagleman has been running since the early nineties and is one of the flattest halves in the world: 330 feet of elevation in 56 miles. What it lacks in hills it makes up for in wind across the open marshland and in heat, because mid June on the Eastern Shore regularly hits thirty degrees and the run has very little shade. The swim is a rectangle in the brackish tidal Choptank, against the current on the way out and with it coming back. The bike runs through the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The run is a double out and back through Cambridge. A fast course, but a hot one.

The course

No course maps for this race. IRONMAN publishes no downloadable route for any leg of this race, only a live tracker that runs on race day, so there is nothing to draw a course map from. Everything below comes from the official course page, checked on the date at the foot of this section.

Swim1.2 mi 1.9 km
One lap

A counterclockwise rectangle starting and finishing at Gerry Boyle Park, in from the small beach and out at the boat ramp. Tidal: against the current outbound, with it on the way back in.

Bike56 mi 90.1 km
One lap101m gain

One loop with just 330 feet of climbing in the whole 56 miles, through country roads and the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. There are no hills at all, and the wind coming across the open fields and marsh does the job the hills would have.

Run13.1 mi 21.1 km
2 laps

A double out and back along the Choptank and through the residential streets of Cambridge, with an updated loop through the Algonquin neighbourhood.

Race Week Is Where People Unravel.

Eleven months of good work, then seven days of panic. Almost everything that goes wrong in race week is somebody trying to help themselves.
