Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“Boulder sits at about 1,600 metres and altitude is the whole story. Arrive either three days out or three weeks out, never one week out, and take your goal power down by five to eight percent whatever the profile says.”

Abraham Spring: founder, Unbroken

The race

Boulder is a straightforward course made hard by one thing: it sits at about 1,600 metres, and everybody arriving from sea level rides and runs measurably slower than their numbers say they should. The swim is a single loop of the Boulder Reservoir between the two boat ramps. The bike is two loops of rollers and fast descents on the Diagonal and Hygiene Road. The run is two loops around the reservoir on trail and hard-packed dirt, on the ground that the American distance running community trains on every day. Plan for the altitude and it is one of the best days out in the sport.

The course

No course maps for this race. IRONMAN publishes no downloadable route for any leg of this race, only a live tracker that runs on race day, so there is nothing to draw a course map from. Everything below comes from the official course page, checked on the date at the foot of this section.

Swim1.2 mi 1.9 km
One lap

One counterclockwise loop, entering at the east boat ramp and exiting at the west before heading to transition.

Bike56 mi 90.1 km
2 laps

Two loops from the reservoir onto the Diagonal Highway towards the Foothills Highway, short rollers, then right onto rural Hygiene Road and a fast downhill run to 63rd Street before rejoining the Diagonal for the second lap.

Run13.1 mi 21.1 km
2 laps

Two counterclockwise loops around the reservoir, part trail, part hard-packed dirt road on Monarch and 55th, with downhill rollers. This is the ground the best distance runners in America train on daily.

Race Week Is Where People Unravel.

Eleven months of good work, then seven days of panic. Almost everything that goes wrong in race week is somebody trying to help themselves.
