4 weeks to race day: the sharpening window

A full build no longer fits, but a sharp one does. This close in, the job is specificity and freshness: race-pace touches, open-water or brick rehearsal, and a taper your nervous system actually absorbs. No heroics; arrive fresh.

R
Recover
Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.
A
Align
Fit the plan to your actual life, not the one you wish you had.
C
Condition
Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.
E
Execute
Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? Ironman training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.

One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.

Already have the app, or want it? The app takes this race and builds the block around it.
Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“The Helix is a small thing that people obsess over and the farmland loops are the big thing that decides the day. Train rolling hills on tired legs, not spiral ramps.”

The race

Wisconsin has been on the calendar since 2002 and it is a hard full distance dressed up as a friendly one. The swim is two laps of Lake Monona with a rolling start. The bike is genuinely hilly, two laps through the farmland outside Madison, with the crowds gathered on the steepest sections and the town of Verona turning out in full. The run is two laps through downtown, through Camp Randall Stadium and around the Capitol, and the finish is one of the loudest in North America. The Helix, the spiral ramp you run and ride up at Monona Terrace, is the detail everybody remembers.

The course

No course maps for this race. IRONMAN publishes no downloadable route for any leg of this race, only a live tracker that runs on race day, so there is nothing to draw a course map from. Everything below comes from the official course page, checked on the date at the foot of this section.

Swim2.4 mi 3.8 km
2 laps

Two clockwise laps of Lake Monona from a self-seeded rolling start. You stay in the water between laps rather than running the beach, then climb the Helix, the spiral car ramp at Monona Terrace, on your way into T1.

Bike112 mi 180.2 km
2 laps

Down the Helix, out south and west, then two hilly laps through the farmland. The climbs are where the spectators stand, particularly in Verona, and then it is one last push back up the Helix to the dismount line at the top.

Run26.2 mi 42.2 km
2 laps

Two laps through downtown Madison, out through Camp Randall Stadium and past the UW Lakeshore Nature Reserve by University Bay, then back around the Capitol building.

T1Monona Terrace, at the top of the Helix. You run up the spiral ramp from the swim exit to get there.
T2Same building. Ride back up the Helix and dismount at the top.

Questions, answered

When is IRONMAN Wisconsin 2026?

IRONMAN Wisconsin takes place on 13 September 2026.

What distances can I race at IRONMAN Wisconsin?

Full (iron distance). Pick the distance that fits your training runway, not your ego: the right distance is the one you can arrive at fresh.

How hard is the course?

Road terrain, rolling profile. Hilly bike, flatter run

What is the swim like?

Lake Monona, fresh water, two laps. Wetsuit-legal, usually 20-22°C. Practise open water before race week, not during it.

How long do I need to train for it?

Race day is 13 September 2026. For the full distance, a proper recovery-led build wants about 20 weeks, which means starting around 26 April 2026. Later starts still work: the block compresses honestly rather than pretending, and it always anchors to the exact race date.

Training for an Ironman From Your Spare Room

Almost all of it can be done indoors, and for a working parent that is not a compromise. There is one part that cannot, and it is not the one you would guess.

Preparing a Body for 140.6 Miles

Your aerobic system will be ready months before your body is. Four structures decide whether you finish comfortably, and only one of them is trained by swimming, cycling or running.

Fuelling an Ironman Without Wrecking Your Stomach

The single most common reason people have a bad day. What to eat, how much, when, and the mistake that ruins more races than under-eating does.
