36 weeks to race day: base season

Plenty of runway. This far out, the win is a boring, consistent base rhythm: aerobic volume, strength, technique. The structured block starts closer in; what you do now decides how high it can climb.

R
Recover
Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.
A
Align
Fit the plan to your actual life, not the one you wish you had.
C
Condition
Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.
E
Execute
Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? Ironman training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.

One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.

Already have the app, or want it? The app takes this race and builds the block around it.
Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“Lightning fast on the bike and then thirty degrees on a three-lap run with no shade. Every minute you gain by pushing the toll road you give back twice on the marathon. Heat and salt plan first, watts second.”

Abraham Spring: founder, Unbroken

The race

Texas produces some of the fastest bike splits in the sport, because most of the 112 miles is two laps of the closed Hardy Toll Road with almost no elevation. It also produces some of the biggest blow-ups, because it is thirty degrees by the afternoon and the run has no shade. The swim is unusual and good: point to point through Lake Woodlands and up a canal with spectators on both banks the whole way in. The run is three laps around the lake and comes alive after dark at Hippie Hollow. Come here for a fast day, but build the heat tolerance first.

The course

No course maps for this race. IRONMAN publishes no downloadable route for any leg of this race, only a live tracker that runs on race day, so there is nothing to draw a course map from. Everything below comes from the official course page, checked on the date at the foot of this section.

Swim2.4 mi 3.8 km
Point to point

Point to point with a single turnaround, starting at North Shore Park, dropping into Lake Woodlands and finishing up a spectator-lined canal at Town Green Park. The lake averages 74°F, so wetsuit legality is a race-morning decision rather than a given.

Bike112 mi 180.2 km
2 laps

Out through The Woodlands into northern Harris County, then two laps of the Hardy Toll Road, most of it closed to traffic. Famously fast, and famously exposed: there is no shade and nothing to break the wind for the whole of it.

Run26.2 mi 42.2 km
3 laps

Three laps around Lake Woodlands, finishing on Waterway Avenue. The section known as Hippie Hollow, with tie-dye banners and costumed performers, becomes the point of the whole marathon once the sun goes down.

Questions, answered

When is IRONMAN Texas 2027?

IRONMAN Texas takes place on 24 April 2027.

What distances can I race at IRONMAN Texas?

Full (iron distance). Pick the distance that fits your training runway, not your ego: the right distance is the one you can arrive at fresh.

How hard is the course?

Road terrain, flat profile. Minimal elevation, significant wind

What is the swim like?

Lake Woodlands, fresh water, point to point. Marginal, usually around 23°C. Practise open water before race week, not during it.

How long do I need to train for it?

Race day is 24 April 2027. For the full distance, a proper recovery-led build wants about 20 weeks, which means starting around 5 December 2026. Later starts still work: the block compresses honestly rather than pretending, and it always anchors to the exact race date.

Training for an Ironman From Your Spare Room

Almost all of it can be done indoors, and for a working parent that is not a compromise. There is one part that cannot, and it is not the one you would guess.

Preparing a Body for 140.6 Miles

Your aerobic system will be ready months before your body is. Four structures decide whether you finish comfortably, and only one of them is trained by swimming, cycling or running.

Fuelling an Ironman Without Wrecking Your Stomach

The single most common reason people have a bad day. What to eat, how much, when, and the mistake that ruins more races than under-eating does.
