I got low. Properly low. I dropped the front end, rolled the hips forward, and spent an afternoon setting up a position that looked, in photographs, like I knew what I was doing.

The bike split was the best I had ever ridden. Then I stood up in T2 and my hip flexors had the texture of dried leather, and I ran the first five kilometres like a man carrying a fridge.

I bought about twenty watts. I paid roughly four minutes for them. That is not a trade, that is a mugging, and I had arranged it myself.

An aero position is only free if you can still run off it.

The Trade Nobody Prices Properly

Aerodynamic drag is the dominant force you fight on a bike. At triathlon speeds most of your power goes into pushing air out of the way, and most of that air is being pushed by you rather than by the bicycle. So getting smaller works. That part is real and I am not arguing with it.

The cost is that getting smaller means closing your hip angle. You bring the torso down toward the thigh, and the hip flexors spend two, three, five hours in a shortened position while also doing the work of pedalling.

Then you ask those same muscles to open fully, repeatedly, for an entire run. They have been held short and loaded for hours. They do not want to. The first kilometre off the bike is where you discover exactly how aggressive your position was, and by then it is far too late to do anything about it.

The mistake is not being aero. The mistake is optimising the bike leg in isolation, as though the race ended at T2.

The Test I Make Everyone Do Now

A bike fit is not finished when the fitter says it is. It is finished when you have run off it.

Ride ninety minutes at your intended race power, in your intended race position, on terrain that resembles your race. Then run twenty minutes off it at your intended race pace. Not a token five minutes round the block. Twenty, because the problem does not show up in five.

What I want to know is not how the ride felt. It is what happens in minutes three to twelve of that run. Can you get your knee through? Does your stride open up, or stay short and shuffly? Does your lower back complain? Where is your heart rate for that pace compared to fresh legs?

If the run falls apart, the position is wrong. Not wrong in general. Wrong for you, at your current mobility, at your current strength, on this course.

What Actually Decides Your Position

Three things, in this order, and none of them is what your favourite professional rides.

First, what you can hold without shifting. If you spend a ride creeping backwards on the saddle, sitting up on climbs, or resetting every ten minutes, you are not riding your position, you are negotiating with it. The advantage evaporates the moment you sit up, and a rider who holds a moderate position for three hours beats a rider who holds an extreme one for forty minutes.

Second, what your hips allow. Hip flexor length and the ability to tilt the pelvis are the limiting factors for most people. That is trainable, which is why position work and mobility work belong together. But it is trainable over months, not before Saturday.

Third, the race itself. A flat, fast, non-technical course rewards commitment to a position. A lumpy technical course where you are constantly sitting up to corner and climb rewards a position you can move around in.

What I Do Differently Now

I moved back up. Not all the way, but enough that my hip angle opened by a few degrees, and I handed back some of the twenty watts.

I also stopped treating position as a setting and started treating it as something you earn. My athletes get a moderate position they can own, then we work on hip mobility and posterior chain strength through the winter, and we lower the front end when the body has actually earned the right to be there. Sometimes that takes two seasons. That is fine. Two seasons of running well is worth more than one season of a good bike split and a bad race.

And I stopped treating photographs as evidence. A photograph tells you what you looked like for one four-hundredth of a second. It tells you nothing about minute ninety, and nothing at all about the run.

The Bottom Line

Aerodynamics are real and worth chasing. But the thing you are optimising is the whole race, not the bike leg, and the currency is minutes at the finish, not watts on a screen.

Get fitted. Then go and run off it, properly, for twenty minutes. If the run is ugly, the fit is not finished, however good the numbers look.

I would rather give you twenty watts back and have you run like yourself.
