Put an athlete on a turbo with single-sided power and ask them to ride one leg at a time. Almost everybody's first reaction is the same noise, which is a clunk, followed by a laugh, followed by a fairly quick admission that they cannot do it for thirty seconds.
That clunk is the dead spot. It is there when you ride with both legs too. You just cannot hear it, because the other leg is covering for it.
You do not pedal in circles. Nobody does. The question is how much of the circle you are wasting.
Where the Power Actually Comes From
Almost all of it comes from the downstroke, roughly between one and five o'clock if you picture the pedal as a clock face. That is where the big muscles have leverage, and that is where a good rider produces the overwhelming majority of their force.
The problem is the transition at the top, around eleven to one o'clock, where the crank is nearly vertical. Force applied straight down there does almost nothing, because it is pointing at the axle rather than turning it. You are pushing on a lever with no arm.
So there is a moment in every revolution where you contribute close to nothing, twice per rotation, at ninety revolutions a minute for three hours.
The Myth I Have to Undo
The old advice was to pull up on the backstroke. Scrape mud off your shoe, imagine pulling the pedal through, actively lift.
It does not work, and the research on this has been consistent for a long time. Riders taught to actively pull up almost universally get less efficient, not more. The hip flexors are small, they fatigue quickly, and asking them to do propulsive work costs more oxygen than the extra force is worth.
What good riders actually do is unweight the recovery leg rather than pull it. They take the weight of the leg off the pedal so the working leg is not lifting it, which is a different and much cheaper thing. The upstroke is not producing power. It is just no longer producing resistance.
What Is Worth Training
Two things, and neither of them is pulling up.
The first is the transition over the top. Getting the force applied earlier in the downstroke, so you are already pushing forward and down at one o'clock rather than waiting until three. This is a timing skill and it responds to practice.
The second is not fighting yourself. Plenty of riders are actively pressing down on the recovery pedal without knowing it, which means one leg is working against the other for part of every revolution. That is the single biggest and most fixable loss.
The Drills That Work
Single leg pedalling. On a turbo, unclip one foot and rest it, ride with the other for thirty to sixty seconds, then swap. Do four to six each side. It is genuinely hard at first and the clunk is the feedback: your job is to smooth it out, and you will find you naturally learn to unweight over the top because there is no other leg to hide behind.
High cadence spinning. Two or three minutes at a hundred and ten or higher, low resistance, focusing on staying smooth in the saddle. If you are bouncing, you are pushing down too abruptly. This is the fastest way I know to reveal a jerky stroke.
And low cadence torque work. Fifty to sixty revolutions, seated, big gear, moderate effort. It slows the whole rotation down enough that you can feel where in the circle you are producing force, which is nearly impossible to sense at ninety.
Ten to fifteen minutes a week is plenty. This is a skill, not a fitness stimulus, and it belongs at the start of a session when you are fresh rather than tacked on at the end.
Honest Expectations
Nobody is going to add thirty watts by pedalling more prettily, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
What you can realistically get is a modest efficiency gain, a stroke that holds together when you are tired, and a reduction in the wasted effort of fighting your own recovery leg. In an event lasting hours, small efficiency differences compound into something that matters, and the effect is largest exactly when you are most fatigued and your form is degrading.
It also tends to reveal asymmetry. If one side is markedly worse in single leg work, that is worth knowing, because it usually points at a hip or a bike fit issue rather than at technique.
The Bottom Line
Stop trying to pedal in circles and stop pulling up. Work on applying force earlier in the downstroke and on not sitting on the recovery pedal.
Single leg drills, high cadence spinning, and some slow torque work. Ten minutes a week, fresh, at the start of a ride. Then forget about it and go and ride your bike.
