He did not quit after a hard session. That is the part people get wrong.
He quit in March, after five months of the same forty minute run, three times a week, at the same comfortable pace, on the same loop. Nothing hurt. Nothing was ever too much. He just stopped one week and did not notice he had stopped until April.
If you had asked him he would have said he lost motivation, and he would have said it in the tone people use when they are describing a character defect. It was not a character defect. He had spent five months doing something his brain had no reason to pay attention to.
Attention goes where the outcome is uncertain. Sessions you are guaranteed to complete are sessions your brain stops turning up to.
The Band Is Narrower Than You Think
There is a well-documented window of difficulty where people stay engaged. Below it, work is boring and drifts. Above it, work is threatening and gets avoided. The window sits right at the edge of what you can currently do: hard enough that the outcome is genuinely in doubt, close enough that it is plausible.
Endurance athletes live outside that window in both directions and usually in the same week. The Sunday long ride is four hours of nothing being asked. Then Tuesday is a session so ambitious that halfway through the second interval you are negotiating, and by the fourth you have quietly cut it to three. One of those bores you and the other one teaches you that you fail at intervals.
Neither is training in any useful sense. One is time and the other is a small weekly humiliation.
The edge is a much smaller target. It is the eight by four hundred where you finish the sixth rep genuinely unsure whether you have two more in you, and then you do have two more in you. It is the swim set where the interval is tight enough that the last two lengths of each hundred require actual attention. You should not know the outcome when you start. You should be able to reach it when you finish.
The Increment Is Smaller Than Your Ego Wants
Because the edge moves, the interesting question is how fast to move with it, and almost everybody answers it too aggressively.
Comedians who build an hour of material do not write an hour. They add a minute or two a year, keeping most of what already lands and testing a small amount that might not. It is a slow, unglamorous method and it produces people who cannot fail.
The same shape works in a pool. A swimmer I coached went from an interval he could just about hold for six repetitions to holding it for twenty over about fourteen months. He never once added more than one repetition at a time. If you had watched any single week you would have seen nothing happening. Across a year it was a different athlete.
Compare that with the standard approach, which is to leap. You have a good week, you feel strong, so you take the long run from ten kilometres to sixteen because sixteen sounds more serious. Your cardiovascular system copes with that quite happily. Your tendons, which adapt considerably more slowly than muscle, do not, and you find out about it three weeks later in your Achilles.
The mistake and the injury are the same mistake. Jumping past the edge is how you lose interest, and it is also how you get hurt, because the edge is defined by what your tissues have currently been prepared for, not by what your enthusiasm can imagine.
Progress You Cannot See Does Not Count
The second half of this is less obvious and it is the part that quietly kills more training years than any injury.
Difficulty on its own is not enough. Effort has to come back to you as information, quickly and unambiguously, or the whole thing runs on faith. And faith runs out somewhere around week seven of a base phase in February.
This is why people persist at things that are objectively harder than triathlon and give them nothing except immediate feedback. You know within a second whether the joke landed. You know instantly whether the shot went in. Endurance training has the opposite structure. You do the work now and the return arrives in eight to twelve weeks, arrives quietly, and arrives in a form that is very easy to miss if you are not recording anything.
So you have to build the feedback deliberately, because the sport will not hand it to you.
What the Watch Is Actually Good For
Which brings us to the thing on your wrist, and to the relationship most athletes have with it, which is somewhere between superstition and dread.
Your watch is a feedback device. It is not a judge, and it has no idea how you are. The distinction matters because these devices now produce two very different classes of number and present them with identical confidence.
The first class is measurement. Pace, distance, power, heart rate, elapsed time, the interval you actually held. These are measured, they are reliable enough to make decisions on, and they are the entire reason the device is worth wearing. When your eight by four hundred comes back three seconds a rep quicker than the same session in January, at the same heart rate, that is the feedback loop closing. That is proof, and proof is what carries people through a winter.
The second class is inference. Readiness scores, body battery, sleep scores, stress scores, estimated VO2 max. These are models. Some are reasonable, some are close to guesswork, and none of them know that your daughter was up twice in the night or that you have a presentation at nine. Treat them as a prompt to check in with yourself, not as a verdict on your day. An athlete who cancels a good session because a number said 34 has handed a piece of their judgement to a wrist computer.
The rule I use is simple. Let the device tell you what happened. Do not let it tell you how you are. The first is data and it is genuinely valuable. The second is your job, and it is answered by how you actually feel in the first ten minutes of the warm up.
If you want the honest version of readiness, trend your resting heart rate and your morning heart rate variability across weeks rather than reading either one daily, and pay attention when they move together and stay moved. That is a signal. A single low morning is noise, and treating noise as signal is its own kind of anxiety.
How to Set This Up in Practice
Most of your week should sit comfortably below the edge. That is not a compromise, it is the design. Easy aerobic work is where the adaptation volume comes from, and it works precisely because it does not demand attention.
Then protect one, at most two, sessions a week that live at the edge. Those are the ones you write down. Same session, or the same family of session, repeated often enough across a block that the numbers become comparable. Not a different clever workout every Tuesday, which feels productive and tells you nothing, because you can never compare this week with last.
Move the edge by the smallest increment that is still an increment. One repetition. Two seconds. Five watts. Then hold it there until it is comfortable, which is your signal to move again.
And keep a log that takes eleven seconds. The session, the number, one word for how it felt. In eight weeks that log is the feedback loop, and on the morning in February when you cannot see any reason to go out, it is the only thing that will show you that you are not standing still.
The Challenge
Look at last week honestly and sort every session into three piles: too easy to be interesting, too hard to be completed as written, and at the edge.
Most people find the third pile is empty.
Pick one session this week and put it there. Then write down what you did, and do the same session again in three weeks, and find out what you are actually made of instead of guessing.
