The number people want is around eight percent. That is roughly the proportion of athletes who start a full-distance Ironman and do not finish it, and historically the rate sits somewhere between five and ten percent.

Put the other way, more than nine in ten starters finish. For an event with that reputation, that is a strikingly high completion rate, and it tells you something important about what the day actually demands.

The Average Hides the Interesting Part

Individual races vary enormously, and the variation is not random.

At the 2024 Kona World Championship, the men's DNF rate was under four percent. At the 2025 Nice World Championship it was around five percent. Those are the most competitive fields in the sport, and they have the lowest attrition, which seems backwards until you think about it.

Meanwhile Ironman France in 2025 recorded around fifteen and a half percent, and Frankfurt the same year came in above ten.

So the best-prepared fields in the world DNF at four percent, and ordinary age-group fields at difficult races DNF at four times that rate.

What Drives the Variation

Almost all of it is conditions, and one condition dominates.

Heat

By a distance the biggest factor. A hot race can double or triple the DNF rate of the same event in a normal year. Heat compounds: your core temperature rises, your gut shuts down, you stop absorbing fuel, so you slow down, so you spend longer in the heat.

This is why races in southern Europe in July and August, and any race where an unexpected heatwave arrives, produce the ugly numbers.

Cold and wet

Less discussed and nearly as dangerous. A cold, wet, windy bike leg produces hypothermia in athletes who are wet from the swim, moving fast through the air, and eating too little to generate heat. People withdraw shaking, unable to operate their brakes.

Wind

A strong headwind on an exposed bike course pushes riders past cutoffs and forces them to spend energy they needed for the run.

Course profile

Genuinely a factor, and the smallest one on this list. A hard course with good conditions produces a lower DNF rate than an easy course in a heatwave.

Why the Best Fields Have the Lowest Rates

Because DNF is a preparation and decision-making outcome far more than a fitness one.

Qualified athletes at a World Championship have raced the distance multiple times. They know exactly what they can absorb per hour. They know their pacing numbers and they obey them. They have contingency plans for heat. They have practised changing a tyre.

They are not finishing because they are fitter. They are finishing because they have made every mistake already, somewhere else, on a day that mattered less.

What This Means for You

The eight percent figure is not a lottery you enter on race morning. It is heavily weighted by things you control.

A Note on 70.3

Half-distance DNF rates are generally lower, often three to six percent, for the obvious reason that there is less time for things to go wrong and less accumulated fuelling to get wrong.

The exception is the swim. A higher proportion of half-distance DNFs happen in the water, because the field contains more inexperienced open-water swimmers.

The Bottom Line

Roughly eight percent of full-distance starters do not finish, five percent on a good day, fifteen or more when it is hot.

Your personal number is not the field average. It is set by whether you tested your fuelling, planned for the weather, can fix a puncture, and are willing to ride slower than you want to in the first two hours.
